Continuous cartogram of Belarus shows country population on Jan 1, 2024
It displays data for urban and rural regions of Belarus. Hover over the map for details.
Though cartogram with all towns marked doesn't show accurate urban/rural ratio and regions area. While nearly 80% of the population lives in cities, towns and urban-type settlement, rural areas occupy a larger area. Also, the areas of the regions are not exactly related to each other according with the population values. I guess, the reason may lie in some imperfection of the generated topojson file.
However, if you map only the big cities, it works perfectly: the cartogram is generated closely according to population data.
This data visualization is as a part of Graphing Belarus series, a personal project to explore Belarus with data.
The isodemographic map is built with topogram (it uses the method developed by James A. Dougenik in 1985) and D3.js using topojson. Region geometries was simplified with Mapshader.
This visualization was inspired by Cartograms Chart Snapshot on The Data Visualization Catalogue, Let's make a Dougenik Cartogram by Nicolas Lambert, and Cartogram: Cantons of Switzerland by Lukas Vonlanthen.
